Diagnosing arthritis
Along with a physical examination of the painful area, the most common test is an X-ray, which can detect cartilage loss, bone lumps (sclerotic structures) and other damage to the cartilage and bone structure of the joint, but in the early stages of inflammation, the x-ray may not detect the signs.
Since there are no laboratory tests that can detect arthritis, tests of the synovial fluid (the fluid that serves as a lubricant between the bones of the joint) or blood tests are sometimes performed to rule out diseases that may cause symptoms, such as connective tissue diseases (such as lupus), infectious diseases of the joints, or metabolic diseases such as gout, in which uric acid accumulates in the joints and causes crystal formation and inflammation.
